I added massive amounts of research to this book project, I completely rewrote nearly everything, and I even changed some of my ideas.

Larp is a type of pretend play that is tightly connected to role-playing games, such as Dungeons & Dragons and World of Warcraft. The difference is that players embody their characters in the 'real' world. This presentation focused on the questions: What is unique about German larp? How do we approach a game culture methodologically?

Gregory, S. & Masters, Y. (2012). Real thinking with virtual hats: A role-playing activity for pre-service teachers in Second Life. In M. J. W. Lee, B. Dalgarno & H. Farley (Eds), Virtual worlds in tertiary education: An Australasian perspective. Australasian Journal of Educational Technology, 28(Special issue, 3), 420-440. http://www.ascilite.org.au/ajet/ajet28/gregory.html

Abstract: Role-plays in a virtual world hold tremendous potential for higher education because they allow synchronous, immersive participation by students located across the globe. They also have the added advantage of allowing students to adopt roles and carry out tasks that are not possible in the real world. In this article, a project that involved pre-service teachers carrying out role-plays based on de Bono's Six Thinking Hats framework is presented. A pilot study was carried out over two years with on-campus students, who performed the role-plays both in a real-life, physical setting and within the virtual world of Second Life. The activity has since been extended to off-campus students exclusively using Second Life. The authors report selected quantitative and qualitative survey data from the pilot study that provide insight into students' perceptions of this style of learning, and discuss the challenges that were encountered and how they were overcome. The future of virtual world-based role-playing as a strategy for teaching and learning is discussed, with a focus on its application to distance education contexts.

alternativ: http://bit.ly/RpgSeCaseStudy

ABSTRACT: Many different approaches to the understanding of RPG rules exist within the gaming community. The rules as written conflict with the player’s urge to mimic reality. The freedom of a game master’s imagination fights with the reassuring weight of authority of established sources. From these axes, a design space emerges. We label the quadrants of the design space with the classic archetypes of RPGs. Clerics (Jurists) find answers to rules questions within the rules as written. Magic Users (Innovators) invent new rules to complement the sourcebooks. Fighters (Realists) use external reality to inform the rules-as-intended. Thieves (Imaginatives) obey the rule-of-cool and consider that anything goes in the pursuit of entertainment. We apply this design space to a case study of interesting questions and answers found on the RPG.stackexchange.com site, and apply archetypes to the answers we found.

Brian Ballsun-Stanton, Samuel Russell (2012) Constrained Optimization in Dungeons and Dragons : A Theory of Requirements Generation for Effective Character Creation.
http://bit.ly/ConstrainedOptRPG

ABSTRACT
The articulation of effective character requirements during the process of character creation in a RPG can provide for more interesting, functional, and rewarding characters for all players at the table. This document explores a theoretical model of character interaction that relates a character’s mechanical and narrative components to the underlying game and applies that model to the practice of character creation in D&D. This model includes three levels: the mechanical-theoretical, a design space of potential choices; the mechanical-functional, an articulation of instantiated choices within the rules, and the story-expression level, providing links between the desired character narrative and the earlier levels. With these requirements, we then provide methodologies for individual and group character creation using the theoretical model.

Vasques,  Rafael  Carneiro: As  potencialidades do  RPG  (Role  Playing  Game)  na educação escolar. 2008. [Dissertation]
https://www.academia.edu/6369978/As_potencialidades_do_RPG_Role_Playing_Game_na_Educacao_Escolar

ABSTRACT
This  work  seeks  to  present  an  analysis  of  role-playing  games  (RPGs)  from  the perspective  of  their  richness  as  didactical-pedagogical  tools.  As  such, we  endeavor to  investigate  the  ongoing  research  regarding  these  games,  as  it  is  carried  out  in Brazil,  in  order  to  achieve  a  better  understanding  of  the methodology  that  has  been applied  to  the  study  of  this  brand-new  subject  of  science. Since  we  notice  a  trend  towards  marginalization  of  role-playing  games  – an outlook  that  could  curtail  initiatives  regarding  the application  of  RPGs  to  the  teaching-learning  process – we  consider  it  necessary  to  demystify  them;  therefore, pieces  of news  disclosed  by  the  media,  implying  a  connection  between  RPGs,  crime  and magic  rituals,  are  analysed;  materials  issued  by  religious  institutions  in  which  that connection  is  punctuated  are  scrutinized  as  well.  To  grasp  this  uneasy  relationship between  role-playing  games  and  religion,  we  refer  to  Max  Weber’s  concept  of disenchantment of the world, and  by  doing  so  we  infer  the  association  of  RPGs  to scientific  thinking – an  enlightening  conclusion  that  has  enabled  us  to  understand  the conflict  between  scientific  and  religious  thinking. Besides  discussing  these  preliminary  issues,  we  identify  in  role-playing  games some  features  from  Michael  Löwy  and  Robert Sayre’s Romantic Anti-Capitalism, a perspective  that  allowed  us  to  understand  certain  traits  of  these  games,  traits  that enable  an  educative  experience  in  contradiction  with  the semi-formation  offered  by Cultural  Industry,  by  proposing  an  action  grounded  in  the  partakers’  Experience (Erfahrung), instead  of  the  typical  commodities  of  the Cultural  Industry  that  are  based in  the  viewers’  Lived Experience  (Erlebnis).  We  also  deal  with  one  of  the  subject’s  particulars  we consider  most  significant: that  role-players  might  cast  a  non-deterministic  look  upon  the  history,  because  the tale  presents  itself  open  to transformation,  and  it  is  a collective  achievement  that denaturalizes  the  social  sphere.  Finally,  we  advocate  the  possibility  of  imbuing  role-players with  a  specific habitus , one  that  spurs  them  to  actively  acquire  reading  practice  and  cultural  capital.

Zitat
Welcome to the first issue of Analog Game Studies, a journal dedicated to the popular and academic study of games with a prominent analog component. The journal itself emerged from lively discussions and debates at the March 2013 national PCA/ACA conference in Washington D.C., where many of the authors and editors met for the first time. It was decided right then and there, over drinks, that various disciplines and communities looking at analog games could stand to benefit from an agile publishing platform to circulate their ideas, but it took many months of further discussion to settle on this final form.

The overall purpose of the journal has been laid out, but a guide to how we’re publishing it might be helpful. The journal will appear monthly on this website, with each issue containing 3 carefully-reviewed articles between the journal’s primary streams of Analysis, Experimentation & Design, and Documentation. This first issue is a special issue with 6 articles. Given the expertise of the editors and the initial authors, it is primarily about live-action and tabletop role-playing games.

Our first article “Reinventing Analog Game Studies” outlines the editorial board’s position on our field of study and the conversations we hope to have using this platform. In the Experimentation & Design article “Post-Larp Depression,” Sarah Lynne Bowman and Evan Torner examine the different strategies live-action role-players use to deal with the emotional and physical fallout of an intense game. Nick Mizer’s article “‘Fun in a Different Way’”: Rhythms of Engagement and Non-Immersive Play Agendas” tackles the question of how players actually spend their precious attention during role-playing sessions. Looking at Dungeons & Dragons, Aaron Trammell’s article “From Where Do Dungeons Come?” analyzes the politically encoded spaces of the wilderness and the dungeon in terms of Cold War anxieties. Evan Torner’s “Uncertainty in Analog Role-Playing Games, Part 1″ initiates a series of posts on the use of uncertainty across different types of role-playing games, looking at how the game frames what the players would consider “knowledge.” Finally, Emma Leigh Waldron’s “Larp-as-Performance-as-Research” considers current larp documentation practices through the lens of performance studies and looks to the larp Mad About the Boy for an example of the various modes.

We are thrilled that the journal has made it this far, and invite you to read, discuss and contribute to the finished product before you. The field could use your voice.

Vielen Dank, Asri.

Zitat
This issue of Analog Game Studies  explores the structural affordances of games. Though it is clear that cultural structures, mechanical structures, economic structures, and material structures all contribute to our experience of the games we play, it is not always clear what the precise relationship between structure and experience is. This issue offers three essays which offer insight into this relationship.

Will Emigh’s essay, “Strategies for Publishing Transformative Board Games,” explores how different publishing models yield different types of games. What political and aesthetic liberties can a game published through Kickstarter offer, when compared to a game published by Hasbro? In “Sex and Play-Doh: Exploring Women’s Sexuality Through Larp,” Katherine Castiello Jones documents some of the techniques used in Cady Stanton’s Candyland and Candyland II: Ashley’s Bachelorette Party, a pair of larps designed to encourage frank and light-hearted conversation about women’s sexuality. Finally, Evan Torner returns to offer his insights on how uncertainty is a key element of role-playing game design in more ways than just throwing the dice. In “Uncertainty in Analog Role-Playing Games (Part 2),” he shows how non-canonical uncertainty mechanics, such as bidding, produce radically different types of games. Though each essay explores a different type of game, all are similar in the ways that they help reveal previously invisible relationships between structure and experience.
