Jason Momoa ist Conan

In den Staaten ist der Film ja jetzt angelaufen und die Kritiken sind, nun ja, bescheiden. Muss normalerweise ja auch nichts heißen, die von mir so geliebten Transformers-Filme haben auch oft nicht viel besser abgeschnitten. Aber der Inhalt vieler der Reviews scheint doch meine Befürchtungen zu bestätigen. Hinter dem Spoiler-Cut mal ein paar Beispiele:

In 1982’s Conan the Barbarian, when he was asked “What is best in life?” he responded with the immortal line “To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women,” and you smiled in recognition, knowing a movie star had been born.

The new Conan, played by Jason Momoa, might answer the same question with “How about a night in with friends, playing Yahtzee?” Momoa, a familiar face from Game of Thrones to Baywatch, has the muscles but not the imposing persona and barbaric presence that Conan requires. Momoa plays him like a gentle giant — if he hadn’t watched his entire village and family slaughtered as a child, he could have easily become a cook or tailor — and Schwarzenegger’s ghost dogs him in every scene. Even the awful Conan the Destroyer was better than this - and that movie was awful."

What’s missing here is a grasp of Robert E. Howard’s original creation, which was the sense of a brute making his way through an unpredictable, unforgiving world and steamrollingthrough everything in his path. He’s a barbarian,. for God’s sake. This Conan is more like a school-crossing guard who gives you the evil eye and rattles his sword when you disobey the “Don’t Walk” sign.Where's the ferocity?

"Years later, when Conan is about 14, he finds himself in a battle, which director Marcus Nispel arranges in such a way that sometimes young Conan seems stuck behind enemy lines and sometimes he's with his own people. In fact, there's really no sense of where Conan is, just generalized commotion - in 3-D. But it's in 3-D, that's essential: Take a bad movie in two dimensions, film it in three, and what do you get? Three entire dimensions of lousy.
P.S. Die meisten Kritiker scheinen aber auch das den Originalfilm nicht zu mögen.

Ein:
Ich kann ehrlich gesagt Filmkritiker nicht ernst nehmen, die einen Film wie Conan nicht kennen.

Lyonesse:
Da der Film in heutiger Zeit ja irgendwie pc sein muß - was Conan nie war - würde es mich nicht wundern, wenn Momoa da ziemlich am herumeiern ist. Die Stärke des alten Films war ja in erster Linie, dass er nicht pc war. Die meisten Kritiken wendeten sich zwar gegen die graphische Gewalt und erhoben Faschismusvorwürfe, aber eigentlich meinten sie: ''Meine Fresse, der ist ja gar nicht pc!'' - und das schon Anfang der 80er.
Dabei sind es doch gerade die Figuren, die nicht so ganz pc sind, die den stärksten Eindruck hinterlassen. Wie sonst hat es Captain Jack Sparrow geschafft zur einzigen Kino-Ikone zu werden, die das letzte Jahrzehnt hervorgebracht hat.
