Witte Wieven - A folk horror game

Zitat
What’s this Game About?
Centuries ago, in the solitary villages and peat towns of Frisia, Flanders, and Wallonia, people lowered their voices near the water, the dunes, the bogs, the woods, and the old bridges. They were afraid of the things that hide in the dark; afraid of being sensed, of being cursed, of being tormented.
The people called the pale shapes seen at dusk Witte Wieven: wise women worth asking for help. The stories that recast them as monsters were, more often than not, just fear and the need to find someone safe to blame. Instead, the true monsters hid in the dark. They spread fear through terror and nightmares.
This is a game set in that distant age of mud and candlelight, about the women who inherited the name anyway and never waited to be hunted. They hunt back.

Fear Is the Weapon
Every monsters strives to spread fear to keep the local population afraid. Afraid of the dark, suspicious of strangers, and quick to turn against each other. This way, the inhabitants of a peat town won’t ask questions when people disappear. Fear allows a monster to feed on the local population.

Why It Falls to Women
In the old stories, men rode beneath the night on great black goats, accepting power in exchange for becoming the servants of monsters; willingly helping to spread fear. Too many made that bargain, because men are easily corrupted and just as easily frightened.
The knowledge about ways to battle the monsters survived in spite of them. Mothers, midwives, and grandmothers guarded it, aware of the monsters and unwilling to disguise them as anything less than what they are. They could be afraid without surrendering to fear, and they were harder to corrupt because their knowledge was meant to protect rather than rule. It got passed from mother to daughter, aunt to niece, and teacher to trusted apprentice to keep fighting. They teach each other Rites, ask favors of the small powers, and work out what a creature really is before anyone strikes it.

Why Not Men
The knowledge and the calling it brings with it gets passed from mother to daughter, never to a son. The first Witte Wieven to bargain with the dark did so to save a man she loved. When the darkness offered him more than she ever could, he betrayed the terms of her bargain and bargained with the monster she had bound. She survived. He did not… not as the man he had been.
The women who followed vowed not to repeat her mistake. Any secret capable of turning a woman into a Witte Wieven would pass only through the women’s line: hand to hand, blood to blood, and nowhere else.
That leaves men with nothing between themselves and a monster’s offer but their own judgment - a poor defense against flattery, the fear of appearing weak, or the promise of power they have been taught they deserve. Worse still, the warnings that might have protected them were dismissed as women’s talk: old wives’ tales, just for a grown man to smile at and wave away. A monster does not need to work hard on a man who was never taught to take danger serious. It only needs to tell him he has nothing to fear and offer him something that looks enough like strength.

The Mark
Every Witte Wieven bears white somewhere on her body. It may be a streak in dark hair, a pale patch of skin, or an eye that turned milky.  It can not be concealed. The mark comes with the calling, and sooner or later, someone notices. And learning what to do when the wrong person sees it is often a new Witte Wieven’s first true lesson.

The Lands of the Witte Wieven
No single landscape holds the dark. The country the Witte Wieven walk is stitched together by roads, rivers, and rumors: a low, wet coast where the sea is always at the door, a crowded and prosperous belt of towns and canals where trade carries news faster than any horse, and an upland of hills, caves, and small villages where old grudges never quite die.
Some regions are flat, wet, and open. Farms sit on artificial mounds, the dike is the only wall, and the tide flats stretch to a horizon that moves twice a day. Whole towns have drowned here, and people still say their bells ring under the water. The old dangers are the sea in its fury, the dune, the fen light, and the dog at the water's edge.
Other regions are crowded and somewhat prosperous : towns, quays, canals, guild halls. Money comes from far trade, but the trade brings rumours and monsters, and fear travels fast in a town. The monsters lurk in the wood and the crooked lane. The night riders make travel unsafe, and the thing that cries in the well, and whatever sits on a sleeper's chest makes life even in a town creepy.
Some parts are hills, caves, slate, and coal. The major river runs through it, the mountains close in above it, and the villages are small and isolated; it’s folk quick to blame a neighbor for spoiled milk and a hard winter. The dangers are lurking in the river, the cave dwellers who keep accounts, the witches the village has already chosen, and the master the witches answer to.

coole Sache!
