Welcome to Stonetop (Playbooks etc unter: https://spoutinglore.blogspot.com/2018/07/stonetop.html)
What is this?

Stonetop  is a campaign playset for Dungeon World. It focuses the game around a small, isolated town and sets the PCs up as the
heroes of that town. It’s less about murderhobos looting tombs and more about PCs fighting on behalf of their homes.

Why?
I’ve found that Dungeon World played as-written can easily end up
with disjointed, somewhat gonzo game worlds. Which is awesome!
But it’s not always what you’re looking for.

I’ve also found that the standard rules encourage (or just assume) a
fair amount of wandering and rootlessness. The PCs are often outsiders. They have some ties to each other but not necessarily to the
wider world. If things get bad, they have the option to walk away and let the world burn. Sometimes, you find yourself asking why
these misfits trust each other at all.The pacing of Dungeon World
can also be rather intense. After all, part of the GM’s agenda is to fill the character’s lives with adventure. You might get some downtime when you undertake a journey,
but often you’re just go-go-going. I’ve had games of Dungeon Worldwere the characters went from level 1 to level 7 in about three weeks
of in-game time!Stonetop is an attempt to slow the pace down and to give the characters some roots. It’s the kind of setting where months, even years
might pass between adventures. Where heroes might retire and raise
families. Where their children might become heroes themselves.

What does it do differently?

First and foremost, play is centered on the character’s home town,
the village of Stonetop. The class playbooks are all unique to the setting. Each one is designed to be tied directly to the village by bonds
of blood, loyalty, friendship, and duty.
The village of Stonetop itself has a playbook, with stats based on the
Steading rules from Dungeon World and moves for mobilizing and
managing the village’s resources and generating threats and opportunities for the town’s heroes to deal with. The Stonetop playbook
also has a set of improvements that can be achieved in play. The village and the region are somewhat pre-defined. You’ll find
maps and almanacs for the nearby regions, steadings, dungeon starters, and some notable NPCs, monsters, and treasures, but there are
still plenty of blanks to fill in during play. Many of the details—such as historical events, the most pressing threats, and even the nature of
the gods—are specifically determined by the playbooks and choices made by the players.
There are some other minor tweaks to the standard rules, including:

  • Slower character advancement
  • A resource management mini-game for the steading itself
  • Follower rules from The Perilous Wilds
  • A different take on the Aid/Interfere moves and bonds, which
incorporates bonds between PCs and NPCs
  • A setting-specific gear list, reflecting Iron Age technology
  • Rules for outfitting before adventures based on the prosperity
and current fortunes of the Village

What else is special about the setting?

All the characters are humans. Fantastic peoples are heard of but
mysterious. No one on in living memory has actually met one of
the bronze-skinned Ustrina. The Forest Folk haven’t been seen in a
decade. The horrid little crinwin plague the village but no one really
knows what they want.

There is no government, no empire, no kings or queens—at least,
not around here. The village is on its own, with only a handful of
neighboring steadings. Far to the south are more civilized lands, but
they have little interest in this northern backwater—for now,
at least.

The village is built on ancient, giant-sized ruins of the Makers, and
other ruins dot the landscape. Magic is not easy, or common, or pre
dictable. Or safe. The past lies buried all around, but it rests unquietly.

Why play Stonetop?

Because maybe you want to be a local hero instead of some wandering murderhobo. Because you want to build a place up rather than
burn it down.Because there’s a world full of mystery out there, and buried secrets—who knows what you might find?
Because the world is darkening, like the sky before a late-summer
storm. And these are good people here in Stonetop, your kith and kin.
If you don’t step up to protect them, who will?

Zitat
Yeah, there are definite similarities. I really like a lot of what Beyond the Wall does, particularly in the communal character creation stuff. But it's always struck me as odd that it slots the lifepaths into a more-or-less standard set of D&D classes with more-or-less standard D&D abilities. It's been on my "someday maybe" list to redo the BTW lifepaths with something like World of Dungeons, and see how that worked. But, y'know, I got the this ^^^ thing to finish first.

I think the biggest differences in "vibe" between Stonetop and BTW are:
1) In BTW, you're all young adults, just starting out, and the game is metaphor for growing up (at least, I think it is). In Stonetop, you certainly can be a young adult, but you can also be an old, established pillar of the community. The game is more about the community itself, and how the PCs fit into it, protect it, build it up.

2) In BTW, character creation and your starting adventure pack shape the village pretty much from nothing. Stonetop has a much more baked-in starting point.

3) BTW tends to put the starting village in context of a larger kingdom or civilization. Stonetop is much more on the edge of nowhere, isolated, etc.

4) The baked in elements of the Stonetop world tend to be... grimmer? The magic especially has a certain sort of bloody, powers-that-you-probably-shouldn't-mess-with vibe. I don't generally get that from BTW, though it certainly can be there.

Zitat
Stonetop tends to have a fair amount of structure to it, and a big (big) part of those 400 pages is walking through that structure and providing guidance on what to prep and how to use that prep in play.

So, a typical new campaign of Stonetop would start with a full session 0: setting up tone/content guidlines, getting hyped about the setting basics, making characters, and introducing those characters. The character creation and introduction process does a lot to tie the PCs to the village, and to introduce NPCs they care about, and to set up threats and opportunities and concerns.

Session 0 ends with a "Seasons Change" roll, which tell you whether spring bursts forth with an opportunity and/or threats to the village. You (the GM) then take what you've been given in session 0 and set up a first adventure. There's a chapter with a step-by-step process for setting this up: developing the core threat or opportunity of the adventure, writing setup questions, framing initial scenes for the village to establish "normal," and then dropping the hook, and seeing what they do.

Typically, the PCs will head out on an expedition in response to the threat. You'll Chart a Course with them (a move/procedure), they'll make preparations, and then head out. You'll run through the journey, and assuming they reach their destination, they'll deal with whatever they find there, and then usually head home. We then switch back to "homefront" play and see how their friends and family and neighbors react, explore the PC/NPC relationships a bit, get some downtime, maybe work on some personal projects. And then the seasons change, and they might pass uneventfully, or they might generate a new threat or opportunity.

There's still *plenty* of room for improvisation. The GM materials encourage you to "prep as much or as little as you find helpful." But you're also strongly encouraged to avoid planning what you think *should* happen. Prep is more thinking about the questions you want to ask, the NPCs you expect them to interact with, the locations you expect them visit, the dangers they're likely to encounter, and the likely course of things if the PCs do nothing. I regularly find myself making some very sketchy notes and then relying on improv to fill in the blanks, but I also find that a couple hours of prep helps build a much richer experience.

You still want/need to be able to improvise because you can never predict how the players/PCs will react to your hooks or your GM moves. And you can't preplan every detail of a location or a encounter, or how the dice will work.

But if your concerned about how, in Dungeon World, you'll sometimes get a new group of PCs and have to weave a complete setting and adventure on the fly... Stonetop doesn't expect you to do that. You *can* (past the first adventure at least), but it's not going to *expect* that of you.

Zitat
The Blessed has a sacred pouch, with "Stock" (sacred pigments, incense, herbs, crystals, etc. -- defined as it gets used). They then have number of moves they can use that consume Stock: they can Call the Spirits, create Amulets & Talismans, mark out Wards & Bindings, put a Veil over themselves or another, call on the world itself to bind a spirit or perversion of nature with roots and soil and vines. Their Stock is a limited resource, and while they don't use it for all of their moves, they have to keep an eye on it.

The Lightbearer can always consecrate a flame, which makes it glow with holy light. This doesn't do a lot by itself, but they also know a number of invocations that they can channel through that holy light: to heal, to reveal falsehood, to dispel magic, to banish evil, to blind or fill mortals with fear, etc. They gain more invocations as they advance, and some of their other moves give them fire- or light-related magic (the ability to scry by staring into the sun, the ability to whisper flames into being, the ability wield holy light as a weapon or shield against darkness, etc.).

The Judge's "magic" is very subtle. They can censure anyone or thing that they deem to be an agent of chaos or enemy of civilization. Depending on the moves they take, they can smite unnatural forces of chaos, turn aside magic or incorporeal attacks with a mundane shield, detect lies and falsehoods, or force others to recognize when they speak the truth. They also have a few moves related to teamwork, scholarship, and defense.

The Seeker (posted in the preview) is the big arcana class. They start with one Major Arcana, with a step towards unlocking it. The Major Arcana always start with some basic, useful(ish) ability or trait, and a set of unlock criteria. Once the criteria are met, they get access to the mysteries--more powerful, more useful moves or spells or whatnot. But the mysteries almost always run the risk of consequences, which are sort of a personal countdown clock of doom.

They also start by drawing 3 minor arcana cards and choosing to have 1 completely mastered and unlocked, 1 in their possession or a secure location, and 1 that they have a lead on.

Each arcana has different powers and unlock criteria, sot he set of arcana that a Seeker starts with really affects their arc and initial flavor.

3) BTW tends to put the starting village in context of a larger kingdom or civilization. Stonetop is much more on the edge of nowhere, isolated, etc.

A dungeon crawl is just a badly planned heist.
Tischrollenspiel ist der Marxismus der Unterhaltung.
